The truth about natural, candid photography – and why you’ll probably cry (in a good way)!

A candid moment between a mother and daughter at a family shoot in Burnham.

There’s a moment in nearly every shoot – sometimes early on, sometimes right at the end – when something just clicks. A shared laugh, a tight hug, someone wiping a tear. That’s the kind of stuff that sticks. And honestly, it’s why I do this.

I’m Amy, a photographer based in Berkshire, Buckinghamshire & Oxfordshire. I specialise in natural, storytelling-style photos that feel like you. If you’re after relaxed, honest photography without the stiff poses or cheesy smiles, you're in the right place.

So what is candid photography, really?

In simple terms, candid photography is all about real moments. No awkward posing, no forced grins. Just you being you. It's less about perfection, more about personality.

It might be the way your little one squeezes your hand. Or the way your partner looks at you when they think no one’s watching. Or the chaos and joy of a dance floor at the end of the night. It’s those small, quiet (or loud!) moments that end up meaning the most.

Why it hits differently

Candid photos tend to stick with you.

They're the ones that make you pause. That feel like a memory, not just a picture. The ones you come back to because they feel right.

I think it’s because they let people be seen as they really are – no filters, no faff. Just a moment, caught.

What it’s like to work with me

Don’t worry – you won’t be left wondering what to do with your hands. I’ll gently guide you through things, but mostly I just encourage you to relax and be yourselves.

Here’s what usually happens:

  • We chat, laugh, and get to know each other as we go

  • I offer light direction when needed, but keep things moving naturally

  • I keep shooting through the quiet bits, the in-between bits, the big moments and the small ones

  • You get to enjoy the moment, rather than perform for the camera

Whether it’s a wedding, a branding shoot, or a family hangout – it’s always about capturing the feeling of the day.

Candid doesn’t mean chaotic

Just because a moment is spontaneous doesn’t mean the photo can’t be beautiful. I keep my editing consistent, warm, and true-to-life. Think natural tones, gentle light, and a soft finish that still feels real.

So while the moment might be raw or unexpected, the end result is something you’ll want to print, frame, or keep forever.

Here’s what people say

A recent client messaged me:

“Amy, your pictures tell a million little stories, all going at times at 100mph.”

That’s exactly what I hope for every time I pick up my camera.

Fancy some of that for yourself?

If you’re planning something special (or just want to remember this season of life as it is), I’d love to hear from you.

Let’s chat and see what we could create together.
